Environmentally Friendly De-Icing
(because all sewers lead to the River)
With the advent of cold, snowy weather, you're probably spending a lot more time de-icing your car and sidewalk. Don't forget your environmental conscience when doing so. Traditional windshield de- icers can contain the same chemical as antifreeze (which is extremely toxic in even very small amounts to pets, wildlife, and kids) and the most common sidewalk de-icer is salt which can harm fish when it runs off into waterways.
Try to find products that are non-toxic and biodegradable, or try using more natural products. It's also beneficial to shovel show early - this will prevent ice from building up. For your car, try spraying your windshield in the evening with a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar to prevent ice from forming overnight. It's a win-win - fewer toxic chemicals for the environment and wildlife, and less work scraping on cold winter mornings for you!
