Marsh Monitoring Program Volunteer Training Session
Saturday, March 3, 2007

Bird Studies Canada is seeking wetland aficionados to be trained as volunteer surveyors to monitor amphibians and/or marsh birds. No prior experience is required. Volunteers are being sought for marshes in the following local areas:

  • Amherstburg
  • LaSalle
  • Leamington
  • McGregor
  • St. Joachim
  • Stoney Point
  • Windsor
  • as well as Wallaceburg, Sarnia, and Rondeau.
If you are interested in participating, there will be a free training session taking place this Saturday, March 3 from 9:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Ojibway Nature Centre. Please bring your own lunch, and dress appropriately for field training in the afternoon. Registration is required as space is limited. Friends of the Detroit River - Riverkeeper Fundraiser
Saturday, March 24, 2007

The Friends of the Detroit River will be holding their annual fundraising dinner for the Riverkeeper program on Saturday, March 24. Proceeds from this event will help to fund the Riverkeeper program through the 2007 season. The dinner will be held in the second story banquet room of the Wyandotte Boat Club, overlooking the Detroit River. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and dinner will be served starting at 7:00. The Wyandotte Boat Club is located at 1 Pine Street, just off West Jefferson (Biddle Avenue). The cost for advance tickets is $35 USD per couple, $20 for individuals, and $10 for children under 12. Critical Thinking Workshop
Thursday, March 15, 2007

The Citizens Environment Alliance will be hosting a workshop on Critical Thinking, led by Dr. David Dolan and Dr. Mike Draney. Examples from Areas of Concern (including the Detroit River) will be used to look at various ways to think about how to improve these ecosystems. The workshop will be held in the Katzman Lounge (Vanier Hall) at the University of Windsor. Vanier Hall is located near the corner of Wyandotte and Huron Church. It will run from 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. This event is free and open to all, but advance registration is required so they know how many people to plan for. Opportunity to Work in Costa Rica
The Canadian Association for Tropical Education and Rainforest Conservation is seeking a full-time Manager to administer and operate the Cano Palma Biological Station. The Station is located next to the Caribbean Ocean within the Barra Colorado Wildlife Refuge and north of the Tortuguero National Park - this region is renowned for its sea turtles and rainforest. The position is full time, with a commitment of at least one year.

The successful candidate is foremost expected to conduct daily operations at the busy Station, and ensure the overall quality of experience of user groups and visitors. Collaboration and development of wildlife monitoring programs will be an important secondary activity. Great Lakes Underwater Conference

New York Sea Grant and the Oswego Maritime Foundation are co-hosting this year's Great Lakes Underwater conference. The theme of this year's conference is "Military Wrecks of the Great Lakes". Conference registration is $25 USD, which includes a buffet lunch and refreshments, in addition to this unique opportunity to hear from leaders in the Great Lakes diving industry! Tree Planting and Care Workshop
Tuesday, March 6, 2007

The Essex Region Conservation Authority will be hosting a tree planting and care workshop on Tuesday, March 6 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Essex Civic and Education Centre, 360 Fairview Avenue, Essex. Paul Giroux, ERCA's Forester, will focus on replanting trees and restoring your property after it has been victimized by the Emerald Ash Borer. He will also discuss planting practices for trees in this region, as well as soils and species selection. The workshop is free, but pre-registration is requested. Upcoming Conferences
The Elderberry Connection is presenting a retreat with the theme "Spiritual Homecoming to the Land: Liberate our Passion for Earth Action". The University of Guelph and Royal Botanical Gardens are hosting a joint symposium on March 8 entitled "Shades of Green: Exploring Biodiversity, Human Values, and Urban Planning". This event will offer an opportunity to explore relationships among the protection of natural areas, urban planning, rural issues, and human values. The symposium will take place at the Royal Botanical Gardens, 680 Plains Road West, Burlington from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m. Registration is $25, and is available on the web site. The Canadian and US Detroit River Public Advisory Councils will be holding a joint meeting and research update on Monday, March 19 at 6:00 p.m. This meeting will include updates about some of the exciting research that is taking place on the Detroit River, including water quality, sediment quality, and mapping changes in the River. This meeting is free and open to all. It will be held at the University of Windsor, Faculty of Law in room 2102. Parks Canada is hiring Park Ecologists and Park Monitoring Ecologists for a number of national parks, including Point Pelee in Leamington.
