Two Great Environmental Events in One Evening
Monday, March 19, 2007
The DRCC is hosting a public information session titled "Detroit River Research for the Non-Scientist" on Monday, March 19 at 6:00 p.m. Scientists who are actively involved with research in the Detroit River watershed will be providing information about their work and results. Speakers include:
The session will take place at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law in Room 2012. The law school is located at the corner of University and Sunset in Windsor. Also Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. at the University of Windsor law faculty, the Environmental Law Society is presenting a lecture by The Climate Project's Walter Palmer. Mr. Palmer will present a live and interactive version of Al Gore's presentation from An Inconvenient Truth, complete with slides and visual aids. Mr. Palmer was trained by Al Gore to present this live version of the film with a Canadian perspective. This event will take place in the Moot Court, and is also free and open to the public. Volunteers Needed: Riverfront Clean-up
Tuesday, April 3, 2007 (rain date April 4)
Windsor's Clean City Committee is kicking off the Rose City Clean Sweep on Tuesday, April 3 with a large downtown cleanup, and the DRCC will be participating with a team. Participants should meet at Maiden Lane at 10:00 a.m., and will then disperse to their designated area to pick up litter before returning to Maiden Lane for a free bar-b-que lunch. Volunteers who would like to participate with the DRCC group are asked to email coulter@detroitriver.ca prior to the clean-up so we know how many people to expect.
If you aren't available for the launch but would still like to participate, teams of all sizes are invited to select an area to clean and sign up for the Rose City Clean Sweep during the month of April. More details about how to organize your clean-up and register are available on the web site.

Nature 25th Anniversary Celebration

For 25 years, Nature has been the benchmark of natural history programs on US public television, capturing the splendors of the natural world. Fred Kaufman, Emmy-award winning Executive Producer of Nature will present comments and a special video retrospective of the program on Thursday, March 29 from 6:30 -9:00 p.m. at the Cranbrook Institute of Science in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Pre-Opening Survey of For the Birds Woodlot
March 24, 25, 31, and April 1, 2007
For the Birds Woodlot is a privately-owned woodlot for birdwatchers in Colchester that will be opening in mid- April. Owner Forrest Emslie is inviting naturalists to participate in a survey of the woodlot prior to the public opening. The survey will start at 10:00 a.m. on March 24, 25, 31 and April 1, 2007.

Source Water Workshop

On Saturday, March 31, an all-day workshop focused on water will be taking place at the Oneida Nation on the Thames (near London) in the Oneida Community Centre. In the morning , the Sustainability Network will be hosting an interactive capacity-building workshop on advocacy campaigning, while in the afternoon the Oneida Nation and the Water Guardians Network are co-hosing a public discussion and cross-cultural dialogue on source water protection.

Grand Re-Opening: Great Lakes Museum

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle, Detroit is having its grand re-opening on the weekend of March 24-25. The museum is open from 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., and the first 100 visitors will receive a free gift. Admission is free. The museum includes artifacts, exhibits, and stories of the Great Lakes. Two exhibits of note are the massive bow anchor of the legendary Edmund Fitzgerald and the restored smoking lounge of the S.S. City of Detroit III, which transports visitors back to the golden age of steamers. The museum is located at 100 Strand Drive on Belle Isle. St. Anne's High School Aquaculture and Great Lakes Educational Studies Program is hosting an open house on Thursday, March 29 from 6:00-9:00 p.m. for anyone interested in learning about their award- winning program and how they can support the program. The existing facility includes a 2,400 gallon Great Lakes aquarium as well as a number of research aquariums, but the department is hoping to expand the program when the school moves to a new building in the fall. Ontario Nature is holding its 2nd annual youth writing contest for grade 7 and 8 students. This year's topic is "What will the environment be like in 2050?". The top three entries will receive a prize package, be published in ON Nature magazine, and be honoured for their achievement at Ontario Nature's annual meeting and conference in Peterborough. The deadline for entries is April 15, and the maximum word count is 700 words. The Essex Region Conservation Authority is hosting a writing contest in cooperation with Sunoco Earth Day for students from kindergarten to grade 8. The topic is "Earth Day: Take the next step".
