Did you know??Gift

Did you know that the holiday season is one of the most wasteful times of the year?

You can help reduce the amount of waste by following some of these tips:

  • Wrap gifts in a towel or old newspaper (the comic strip section is decorative and entertaining)!
  • Make your own wrapping paper by decorating scrap paper or left-over tissue paper.
  • Make a gift such as cookies, cakes, or your own soap
  • Ornaments made of fallen pine cones and a bit of glitter are beautiful! Mix water and flour to create your own non-toxic glue.
  • Give a potted plant or reusable food containers
  • Make your own cards and reuse cards to create gift tags next year
  • Put your lights on a timer instead of leaving them on all night
  • Save ribbons and bows and reuse them next year
  • Share your "green holiday" knowledge with others!

Detroit River could be a source of clean power

Professor Michael Bermitsas

A professor at the University of Michigan's Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Michael Bernitsas, has developed a device that could harness power from slow-moving currents (such as the Detroit River).  He has named the machine VIVACE which stands for Vortex Induced Vibrations for Aquatic Clean Energy. A recent feasibility study showed that the device could generate power from the Detroit River which could be a new source of clean, renewable power. The device is set to be installed in the Detroit River in early 2010.
