Mercury Items

Mercury Items and Non-Mercury Alternatives
Below is a list of items that were accepted during the DRCC's mercury collection project, along with examples of non-mercury alternatives (where they exist). Be sure to use this page as a reference when looking for household mercury items in your home.

Thermometers
Mercury thermometers contain a silvery-grey liquid (not red). They should be brought to the EWSWA for safe disposal.

Alcohol and digital thermometers are mercury free alternatives. You should select one of these alternatives to replace your mercury thermometer.

Electronic thermostats are also a mercury free alternative with the added benefit of being programmable, which can result in reduced energy usage and cost savings as well. Other thermostats may or may not contain mercury - check the packaging before making your purchase.

Button Batteries
Button cell batteries are small, silvery items that come in various sizes, usually smaller than a dime. They are commonly used for cameras, watches, hearing aids and some electronics. Some are made of mercuric oxide, but there are also alternatives that exist that look identical.

Zinc-air button cell batteries are a good mercury free alternative. Consult the packaging when you make your next purchase.

Fluorescent Bulbs
Fluorescent bulbs come in two types: tubes and compact bulbs. Flourescent tubes are white, come in a variety of lengths and may be straight, u-shaped or circular. Compact fluorescent bulbs have a metal thread like a traditional bulb, but the glass portion is made of spiral or u-shaped tubes.

There is no mercury free alternative for fluorescent bulbs. You should continue to use them, however remember to dispose of used houseold bulbs properly at the Household Chemical Waste Depot. Businesses can arrange for recycling of their fluorescent bulbs.
