Stormwater and Rainbarrel Project

Reducing stormwater pollution in the Detroit River...one rain barrel at a time!

During the spring of 2008, the DRCC along with the City of Windsor, the Windsor Utilities Commission, and the Essex Region Conservation Authority launched the rain barrel pilot program. The pilot program was targeted towards 250 residents in the South Walkerville area, where basement flooding is a common problem due to combined sewer overflows. The South Walkerville area was also the first location identified for downspout disconnection. The first rain barrel was installed on Earth Day 2008 and approximately 110 homes have since signed up for the program.

Rain barrels and downspout disconnection help to reduce the chance that sewage treatment plants will overload during storm events and spill into the Detroit River. It can also help protect drinking water, conserve water, and will save you money! For more information, download the rain barrel brochure or contact the DRCC.

Funding for this project was provided by the Ontario Ministryof the Environment through the Canada-Ontario Agreement.
